“I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.” -Red from The Shawshank Redemption
I now imagine that I read those words in a short story by Stephen King over 20 years ago. I was reading the story of two men who had been imprisoned at the Shawshank Prison. Later they made a movie with a similar name which many of us have seen at this point, or at least I hope so (and if you haven’t, watch this trailer to pique your appetite for a great movie!)
The story told a tale of a man named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) who had escaped this prison, but not before making friends with Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman). While they were still incarcerated, Andy shared with Red his dream of one day owning a fishing boat on the coast of the Pacific in Zihuatanejo where he has hoped to spend the rest of his days.
I still get all choked up when I can still hear the voice of Morgan Freeman saying those words as he flies out to the Pacific to find his friend. And now, 20 years later, I have finally forged the path to that same remote beach on the Pacific to see if I can also find his friend and that Pacific to see if it is as blue as it was in his dreams. And I’m so nervous about my trip…granted not as nervous as Red must have been, but I am still nervous.
